My earliest childhood memories were musical.
My Grand Maw, a wonderful, loving Appalachian woman looked after me. While she worked in the kitchen, I would entertain myself with toys on the kitchen floor. When I eventually got bored, Granny would begin to sing to me.
I loved her voice, and would sit quietly (not an easy feat) while she sang. Inevitably I’d ask, “Granny, what is that song about? What kind of music is it?”
She explained they were songs she’d heard while growing up in Peach Creek, West Virginia. “I guess they’re Ole Timey.”
While I can’t say I remember any specific melodies, it did have a huge impact on me musically. As I matured and began pursuing a music career, first studies in college, and then professionally performing, life took me all over the country. But with all my experience, no matter how big a city I moved to, I never lost my love for those hauntingly simple, mountain melodies.
It’s been a lifelong dream to write and record a collection of Ole Timey songs that include my experiences of being raised in Peach Creek.
My dream is coming true with Apparition Railway. Thanks for listening!
